Kneeboarding

We finally got a day with no rain! It was sunny and warm all day long so we had activities in the morning and in the afternoon. Bill did the first half of his scuba certification today. He’s finishing up the written part now so he may do an update tomorrow. He does the second dive to finish certification tomorrow morning. His training today went really well and he’s excited about diving. I think it will be a fun community of people for him to be part of.

I went snorkeling while he was diving. It was a good snorkel trip, but the water was rough so it was a workout. When you jump in the water, all these little fish come over to see if you have food. I think some of the snorkel guides bring bread crumbs so the fish are used to getting snacks. I have a leftover, dried out cookie that I might take tomorrow to see if they eat those. I went for a walk this evening and found a place where I think I can go snorkeling any time I want to. That would be much more convenient than going on the boat. I’m scheduled for another snorkel trip in the morning but I might try going on my own after that’s over. We only get 30 minutes in the water.

After lunch, Bill and I signed up for a windsurfing lesson. We got the lesson, realized that it was going to be crazy difficult and decided to do kneeboarding instead. Windsurfing is one of those things that’s best if you live close to water and have lots of opportunities to practice. It’s not something you can learn in a 10 minute demonstration on the beach. I had planned to try skiing, but I missed the ski lesson. I made it to the kneeboarding lesson and that worked out great. None of the people who tried skiing were successful but my kneeboarding experience went really well. It still takes some effort but it’s not nearly as difficult as actual skiing. It was pretty fun!

I went to swim after supper and that was my day. I’ve used up all my energy! I’ll have a few pictures once Bill has a chance to send them to me.

Scuba Prep

Hello All: I’m doing a combined post tonight for Bill and me because we don’t have a lot to write about. We took the catamaran out this morning and that was a lot of fun. We are both getting better at sailing. It started raining at 1pm today and rained all afternoon. I had planned to try sail boarding, but the rain canceled those plans. I just got back from the pool and it was still sprinkling. The rain worked out well for Bill because he has a bunch of studying to do for his first day of scuba training tomorrow. He’s still working through his scuba book and taking quizzes. It’s probably stuff that should be done over several days, but he has to be finished by 8:20am tomorrow. I spent the afternoon on a swing in the lobby listening to a French podcast that I like about people who do much more adventurous travel than me to places where you have to pack your own food and carry it with you. It was good language practice and a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Bill’s post is below and I’ll add a few pictures too. He should have an interesting post about his scuba experience tomorrow.

Hello all!!
I don’t have a lot to report today, I think I have caught up on most the things of interest here that people may want to know, I bet there are more and I will post them when I become aware.

Today Emily and I took out a small catamaran for a while in the morning. I think that is one of the better options for things to do here. Emily and I enjoy activities that we can do and go when we want.
I think resort vacations have some pluses like Emily doesn’t have to pick any restaurants and they have some equipment that we can use. The bad part is you still have a schedule to follow when it comes to lining up when you will eat and you can’t always get good equipment. I will take some pictures before we go of the stuff here.

We did get in some exercise this afternoon in the gym. I had it to myself today which I prefer since I have my own back home.

I did some pictures of the rec room, they still have a  cigarette machine. It has cigarettes in it, the Newports were sold out though.

We tried one of the other “restaurants “ on property tonight. It’s Asian influenced. It was good, a little more restaurant experience with it.

My post tonight is going to be short as I need to study for my open water scuba diver class tomorrow and I have some book work that needs done! I’m excited about getting the certification. Scuba is one of the big things I remember wanting to do as a kid. We’ve done the Discover Scuba classes and they are cool but having the certification will be cooler.

Day 4 with Bill

I’m going to start off with a few things that I keep telling myself that I should put in the blog.

Did we mention that we are staying at Couples Negril? That should probably be day 1 but the travel day can really take it out of you!
I’m not sure if things our readers are interested in hearing about from us are always covered in the posts, if you wish we would talk about something specific please leave us a question in the comments section and we will try and answer in our next post. You can also send us email or texts if you have that information.  My email is mwa435@yahoo.com if anyone wants to contact me directly.
Feel free to send someone that may be interested in our blog a link like this one you can copy and paste

Hopefully it works for you!
While ganja is prevalent in Jamaica it is illegal to actually use it.
The sun here is harsh, Emily and I both have gotten a little burn in places where the sunscreen has been wiped of or coverage was limited. It seems very common for people here to miss their knees and to have very uneven coverage. Sprays and liquid sunscreen may be the way to go for even coverage. I still like the sticks though and I think that we are paying more attention to the application and I have stopped draping my towel over my shoulders to go down to the beach.
We take a lot of showers here, sometimes on the beach to rinse the sand, salt water or the pool/jacuzzi water off and sometimes after just being out and about. Add those to the regular daily shower and that’s a lot of showering. For those who’ve not been in the ocean, the water leaves a film of salt and fine sand on you and you feel so much better after just rinsing off with plain water, it also helps to get it off your face and lips.
There are what we assume are tree frogs that make a noise that reminds me of the ping with echo in The Hunt for Red October except instead of one ping only it is a constant barrage of them in the evenings.
Today we hoping to get to go on the night snorkel! (I’m working on this after lunch) We’ve been taking it easy for the most part. We did do some swimming at the beach, which is shallow and all sand so there isn’t a lot to see with the snorkel gear, there are crabs and fish that are hard to see because they are naturally camouflaged. The bigger fish are easier to see because of their eyes. I floated with a fairly large school for a while just watching them leave a bubble around me. Mostly we were trying out our gear after I spent some time this morning cleaning the glass in both of our goggles with toothpaste to help with the fogging. Mine weren’t doing too bad but Emily had issues again with her’s. I did her’s 4 or 5 times and seemed to help, she didn’t have any issues today. I think that I will do a quick touch up before going tonight. We ended up having lunch a little later than normal.
Emily and I have looked at the off site excursions that weren’t included in our trip and for the most part they seem rather overpriced. Some because we are unsure of the duration of the excursion. Others because we can do it anywhere and cheaper. There was only a couple that looked like possibilities. One we most likely will do. We do have a sunset cruise on Tuesday that should be fun and there’s another we are debating. We have definitely decided that we are travel critics, not sure if that is good or bad!? It would be nice to be able to check out some of the other resorts and their options. Like Emily mentioned in one of her posts, it’s very nice here if you didn’t know anything different. Even with the rain! Which it is doing again. We’ve had some issues in the past like with the grueling schedule in Peru and my problem with the Spanish school in Colombia, for the most part though we have had really good things to share and have learned for ourselves. I’m glad to be traveling again!
Aisha tells us that there are four buildings on this resort that are empty because of covid. She and the staff has had one vaccine dose so far and they will get the second next month. She said she is ready for covid to be done. She also told us that it’s not just afternoons that it rains during the rainy season, it could go all day. I’m not sure what we would do if it does that. She is very nice and friendly. She has two boys one is two and the utter tis tirteen (how she say it mon).
Dexter is actually Dexton.
We went on our night snorkeling trip and we got to see some more sea life than our last trip. There was a turtle, some rays, puffer fish, star fish, lobsters, eels, a crab and a squid. There was an octopus that we didn’t get to see. It was under a board that I’m guessing they put down to attract said octopus. We do have some pictures that are okay. The water was a little murky and the flashlights weren’t super bright.
It was a long day today, we tried to get in to eat before our trip and got some appetizers that we barely touched. The “nachos “ were chips and canned cheese dip and the anti-pasta plate only had a few things worth eating so we had granola bars. After we went to supper, it was better than the appetizers. I had a pizza and Emily had soup. I got dessert that contained way too much rum. I would have like to taste more of the chocolate mousse. I ate it anyway.
So even though somewhere I was given the impression that one could get food 24 hours a day, that is not true. Some of the schedules are off for our normals.
Thanks for reading! Shout out to Sebastian, I will have to look at reading some of the short stories!

Snorkeling

If you were going to buy something for a two and a half year old, would you get a ukulele or maracas? My friend has a little girl who I haven’t seen in over a year. Julianna doesn’t remember me, but I’d like to bribe her into liking me next time I get to see her. I feel like something really noisy that she can carry around with her would be a good option. The gift shop here has both ukulele’s and maracas. I could teach her this song called Pocked full of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield. It’s very kid friendly and sticks in your head and won’t leave. She could sing it with her new instrument. If anyone would like to weigh in on this, feel free to do so. Bill and I are planning to visit some other areas where shopping will be an option so I don’t have to decide immediately.

Bill spent part of the morning scrubbing our snorkel goggles with toothpaste. Once he was finished, we took them out to the ocean and they worked much better and didn’t fog up. It was really exciting! We are scheduled to do nighttime snorkeling tonight and we are planning to clean them again with toothpaste before we go. We just went into the water next to the resort this morning so there wasn’t a lot to see, but there are schools of little fish that are almost completely clear. The sand is white and there’s nothing to hide in close to shore so all the fish and crabs are either white or clear. You can see through them. It’s fascinating! I found a dead white crab and various sorts of whitish clear fish kept coming over it eat it. Unless you look closely, you think the water is empty of living things, but Bill and I snorkeled through some large schools of little fish. They were mostly clear with a blueish tent along the back where their vein/digestive system is.

It’s raining right now like it does most afternoons. I have Spanish lessons at 3pm so that will work out well. Bill and I are trying to decide what other activities we want to do next week. Even though this is an all-inclusive resort, a lot of activities are not included and they are very pricy. I thought about doing parasailing, but it cost $120 for about 10 minutes in the air. You can go snorkeling in the daytime as part of the resort package but it’s $35 to go at night even though the staff and the locations are exactly the same. There is an option for snorkeling, boating and cliff jumping that we will probably do. It’s a 3 hour trip for about $60 so that seems like a fairly reasonable deal. We want to mostly do things that are included since this is a fairly pricy vacation and we can do things like zip-lining in Costa Rica on another trip for less money. We are fortunate that we came to Jamaica now. Our cleaning lady just told us that 3 or 4 blocks of rooms are empty right now because of COVID. This place would be packed and crazy any other time. We are on a bay and it’s completely surrounded by resorts. I’m sure their numbers are low too. It doesn’t seem like this is a large enough area to manage all those people. I would definitely not want to be here when it’s full. If we get to keep traveling, Bill and I should become pretty good travel advisors. I’d consider organizing a trip to Costa Rica.

We did nighttime snorkeling tonight. It was awesome, but I’m completely wiped out so I’ll have to write about it tomorrow. Bill took some underwater pictures and video that we hope turned out well. I’ll post those tomorrow too.

Day 3 in Jamaica with Bill

Day three in Jamaica!

The water sports guy is Dexter. The cleaning lady is Aisha, not sure on spelling.

They are very good about tell you to use hand sanitizer when you enter the restaurants and shops here, I get too much sometimes as they have this bulk container with a pump that will put out about half a cup if you give it the full pump.

We did a snorkeling trip this morning, it didn’t last very long and they made us wear life jackets the whole time snorkeling. It was odd especially since the salt water and my warm layer makes me float quite well anyway. The trip was short as well, I would have liked to have spent more time in the water. There was not a lot to see though, there is not a lot of reef here compared to Bonaire or even the islands off Colombia. There was a cannon and an old anchor that they probably dumped in for some added interest. The guide talked about it but I couldn’t get what he was saying. All guides probably have a different story or it changes on the group. It’s possible where they scuba there is more. The scuba people came back with a stringer of Lion Fish.

After our snorkeling trip we rested on the beach loungers before we took out a couple stand up paddle boards. The water and wind was active. I fell off my board twice, once while standing and the other while kneeling. Emily took the opportunity to do a little extra snorkeling.

We stopped and talked to the scuba shack guy about me doing some scuba. Emily likes the idea of scuba but isn’t as excited about it as I am. She likes the snorkeling better. As for me, I’m thinking I will go ahead and get open water certification while here. It will give me an activity to do. Emily is thinking about doing some water skiing classes while I am do my scuba.
I’m curious about the scuba certification class and if it will be full on or not. It is PADI certification so it will be what I want but they guy didn’t talk about the sit down part just the hands on stuff. I will know more Sunday when next week’s instructor is here.

While it is beautiful here, very green we have been comparing this trip to Bonaire. Bonaire is more arid, but smaller and there is a reef off the beach at the resort. Emily also mentions it more family friendly and international. We have talked about trying some of the other islands if we can before all the tourists come back, it has been nice to be here with less people. We can see that this place could be wild if it was at capacity! It would be nice to maybe find a place that is closer to Bonaire’s vibe but with more of a Spanish flair. We would like use our language skills some more. I think I would like a resort like in Bonaire with an area like Cartagena that we could access by scooter.

After lunch we hung out on some swinging chairs while it rained. It was relaxing. Then we went down and Emily did her workout routine and I got a lift in. The gym is fairly well equipped with machines and some free weights. I will see how it went tomorrow. Emily figures we will be sore from all the activities today. It seems like we also had a fair amount of down time.

We ate a little early at the grill place because Emily was going to have Spanish class but Alex ended up having to take care of something else. I did Duolingo for a while.

We are having a good time so far, I do think there should be more offerings to suit our tastes and our normal times. Most the evening entertainment is at 10pm. I don’t have a huge desire to change up normal routine.

Time for more relaxing! Hope everyone is well!

Snorkeling

Well, we’ve been here for two and a half days, we have wet swimsuits everywhere, and I’ve decided that the nudists might be on to something. It really would be nice to take a towel down to the beach or the pool and call it good. I want to go swim again tonight and I’m going to have to put on a wet suit. I guess I could wait until it’s dark, then go to the nude beach. I’m still pretty white thought. If there’s any light at all, it will light me up like the moon. That would be unfortunate. I did some dance exercises on the yoga deck earlier today so there may already be questionable video posted on the internet.

I don’t think Jamaica is going to be my favorite vacation destination. It’s definitely not a place to come if you want to learn anything or meet interesting people. But, we have been doing fun things and it’s going to be a good vacation. We’ve had fantastic vacations in the past so the bar was pretty high. They can’t all be 5 stars. If I hadn’t been anywhere else, I’d think this was an amazing place so it’s all about perspective.

As Bill noted yesterday, we went catamaran sailing yesterday. We did learn some things about sailing catamarans, and I think we will do more of that. It’s tricky to get the sail to catch wind in the direction you want to go. The hardest part is turning to go back in the direction you came from. It’s like being Moana in the Disney film only right now, our sailing skills match the part where she flips her catamaran over in the ocean. We watched a video last night of a very skilled 10 year old sailing one beautifully. That said, Bill got a short description about how to use the catamaran. I understood very little of the instructions, but he managed to figure it out pretty well. It’s a different form of driving, which I’m very bad at on water and on land.

After breakfast this morning, we did a short snorkeling trip. It was fun, but the snorkeling here is not as good as other places I’ve been. We also had to wear ridiculous life vests that float up around your neck and choke you. I’ve snorkeled in lots of places and I’ve never had to wear a life vest. I’m still having problems with my goggles fogging up. Between being hanged by my life vest and blinded by foggy goggles, I don’t really know what’s in the water here. After snorkeling, Bill and I took out some paddle boards. The wind really picked up while we were out so it was the roughest paddle board experience I’ve had. It took a lot of energy to make it back to the beach. But, I think paddle boarding or using the catamaran will be a much better snorkeling option for us. We can take those out any time and not have to be on someone else’s schedule or worry about life vests. I’m really surprised that they make you wear vests. You can engage in all sorts of other questionable activities without any trouble, but you have to wear life vests on a fairly calm bay.

After lunch, Bill and I worked out at the gym. It rained here again this afternoon. We are trying to time activities when the sun is out and workout while it rains. There is a big yoga deck with weights, exercise balls and other stuff, which is perfect for me! It’s super hot and humid and it feels awesome. The indoor gym with AC is also really nice with lots of equipment so Bill used that.

I was supposed to have Spanish lessons this evening, but my Spanish teacher, who is a young guy in Panama, got stuck at a bank and had to cancel. I miss being able to practice Spanish. Everyone here that we’ve met is American and most of them seem to be from the South.

Bill has some pictures. There are quite a few of them. I’ll post half in this post and half in his.

Rainy Day in Jamaica

I had planned to write a post today, but it’s getting late and Bill has done a really good post for us, so I’ll leave it to him to tell you about our day. He also took some pictures so I’ll post those as well.

Even though I had a post already today, it’s pouring rain here now so I thought I would start a second post. The rain is supposed to be done by 2:15 or so. Besides I didn’t do a post last night, I was wore out! I woke up about 1:30 and couldn’t get back to sleep before the 3:30 wake up alarm.

We did some swimming in the ocean, the beach is nice and sandy but it’s not very deep or interesting to snorkel in. There is reef here but it’s out a ways. The guy that signed us up for the night snorkeling told me that there are some places we can get to by small catamarans that they will teach us how to use. We’re supposed to be doing that right now. Everyday at 9 and 1:30 they do instruction for a list of things. We may try as many as possible. I need to get his name, he is also the go-to guy for dealing down prices for the off site parasailing trip.

The nude beach is right next to the regular beach, there is a privacy fence but it stops a fair distance from the water and then there is a roped off section. It was not busy and not everyone was nude. It’s a little different to be swimming along and then look up out of the water to someone’s butt. It’s between mid thigh and waist deep along the outer roped area depending upon how tall you are. It’s kind of like being at work sometimes, you see a lot more nudity than you planned on. It is a good thing to be living life not caring about what others think. Adam and Eve started out naked until innocence was lost, maybe they are innocent? Or maybe they have just forgotten that clothes help protect things from the elements, the sun comes to mind and the fish swimming around.

Lunch was good, the snapper had a teriyaki sauce that was a bit powerful. I would have been happy with a full plate of the shrimp spring rolls.

It’s 20 to 5 and it’s been raining again for a while. Emily and I did get a short catamaran lesson on the beach by the go-to guy there whose name I need to get again. He’s very friendly and he said he had the parasailing guys at $100-110 but tomorrow only since they are off on the weekends for some reason. More people must come for the week and fly on weekends? I’m wondering what happened to the lower price he said earlier that may be more worth doing it for.

Emily and I sailed a catamaran for a while until they had to take the rescue boat out of the water. I think the rescue guy just wanted to go home early. Our go-to guy was all about us going out but when we came in closer to shore the other guy wanted us to come in and then they pulled the boat out. They had been getting ready to do that when we first came down and one of the guys told me there was no wind for it while the Jamaican flag on one of the bigger boats was flapping in the breeze just offshore. Now that we know a little bit about it we can just go take one when the rescue boat is available. I sailed for a short time then explained it to Emily as our go-to guy is a little hard to understand. Most of the Jamaicans are. It’s a heavy accent! They are all very friendly and remind us that we are on vacation so they will take care of everything.

We are hoping that our night snorkeling is still going to happen, with the rain it’s hard to judge at this time. We are going to go eat early at the grill place here that we went to last night as they are open from like 11am to 5am with a expanded menu at different times. I’m guessing that we are having burgers and fries.

They didn’t do the night snorkeling trip and have rescheduled it for Saturday. We did find out before dinner so we went to the main dining area/ restaurant. I’m surprised that they didn’t capitalize on the ocean view for their restaurants, we had a view of some trees and beyond that the pool. The grill/ Italian Bistro (at dinner it becomes a bistro) does have an area that overlooks the beach they use for dinner service.
Dinner wasn’t bad, I had little bit of beef, pork and chicken with the jerk seasoning the beef was the best and the chicken was better than last nights from the grill place. They have a good variety of other things but I wanted to try the different versions of jerk.

After dinner we walked along the beach for a bit as it was getting dark. When we got to the property line the security guard informed us to not go further in that direction he said the other way was okay even past our resort. It seems to be a lot of resorts both ways but they must not have security the way we were headed. He said that people may be on the beach and would harass us possibly.

We have a plan started for tomorrow, we’re going to go do some snorkeling in the morning and then watch the weather for when it may rain then do some exercise when it does in the gym. After that we my take the shuttle into town for shopping and people watching.

I will do some pictures of the resort soon and get them posted.

Bill’s Arrival Post

Good morning everyone!!
We made it to Jamaica yesterday afternoon. We ended up having a little extra time in the shuttle because our driver didn’t have to load our bags and he forgot to ask everyone where they were going like he said he normally does. It wasn’t very long getting back to our resort. We are at the smaller of the two resorts, the other has double the rooms per our driver.

Even though our Hynes Eagle bag gave us a extra bit of ride time it is an awesome bag. We we’re lining up to get on the shuttle and a woman from the Carolinas ask if we really only had our backpacks and the bag Emily carries when the porter asked for out suitcases. She is a travel agent and has traveled the world but still needed two suitcases for 4 days of travel to an all inclusive resort. Each one would have held all our luggage. They were staying at the bigger resort, it was too bad as they were probably the most interesting people we will meet here. In addition to traveling, the husband also mentioned he rode motorcycles and I could have chatted with him about that as well. Maybe once we start doing some of the excursions we will get a chance to meet more people.

The resort is nice, does show a little age to it. It’s a harsh environment though as well being right on the ocean. It has an island feel to it, not blatantly Jamaica though. I would like more vibrant colors. There is a gym that we will use while here, seems well equipped so that’s nice. A couple pools and bars. I’m hoping to get some use out of the dive shop and water sports area. They teach sailing catamarans, sailboarding and a few other things. I’m debating doing my scuba certification here since there’s not many people here as Emily mentioned.
There is a nude beach here that I’m not sure where it is and didn’t ask, I did see and woman and a man walking along the beach yesterday afternoon, both were topless.

So far Jamaica is beautiful for the most part. There was some sketchy areas along the highway to our resort. I was noticing that some of the concrete/block construction reminded me of places in South America with the re-rod sticking out on top. There is also a lot of the very colorful shanties that are stereotypical for Jamaica.

We made a stop on the way to the resort yesterday and one of the people in our group must’ve made a purchase of marijuana, I’ve been around it enough over the years that I recognized the smell. Emily mentioned we also were informed of “Farmer Bill” who I think is just off property. Ganja/ marijuana is pretty much a part of the culture here. Could be why everyone is so laidback 😎 I’m interested to see how aggressive they are in trying to sell it to tourists. It will be hard to make any solid conclusions about how many tourists participate based on how hard they push it but, I will still think the more aggressive the more tourists who do.

So far the food here hasn’t wowed me. There is some potential at each of the four restaurants based on the menus. We tried the hotel’s jerked chicken last night and it was a little dry and not as flavorful as I would expect. Grilling skinless chicken breast can be tricky anyway but, even harder if they pre-cooked it.
Breakfast is buffet with a omelette and pancake/waffle station. This seems to be a universal mask wearing event. Everything else seems to be if you have space around you then nobody cares. Occasionally you will see some people wearing masks walking around, not often though.

There is a range of people (sizes, colors, shapes and ages) here, mostly I’m guessing, Americans. I think that things are geared towards American tourists more so than other places we’ve been. The more we travel I will have to take note of how American the breakfast is. The continental section was very limited and I find that while I like American type breakfast I was disappointed.

Hopefully everyone is doing well, we are rested and ready for some adventure to share!!

Arrival in Jamaica

I’m doing a short post tonight because I’m exhausted! We arrived in Jamaica without any trouble, but it was a long travel day. We left the hotel in St. Louis this morning at 4am and got to our resort around 2pm this afternoon. Travel time to Jamaica is relatively short compared to other places, but wearing masks makes it a much harder trip and we had to go through a lot of customs lines and a long bus ride before we got to the resort. We only had a snack for lunch, so I had a mild headache most of the day and we were pretty hungry by the time we finally ate around 5pm.

The resort seems nice but there are almost no people here. It’s under 50% capacity. In some ways that’s nice, but I don’t think we are likely to meet many interesting people. But, there is a small pool and a hot tub that we had all to ourselves tonight. Most people prefer the bigger pool with the bar, so I think the smaller one will be largely empty.

We scheduled a nighttime snorkeling excursion for tomorrow night and we’ll get some other activities set up tomorrow.

There is a weed dealer called “the farmer” on the resort. Our snorkel guide pointed him out to us while we were setting up our snorkel trip.

We will probably have a longer post tomorrow when we aren’t so wiped out.

Snorkeling/Dolphin Watching Again

I only have a short post tonight since I’ve already posted about snorkeling and dolphin watching. I did a second day of that this morning, and it was awesome again. I got some great dolphin video. It was a beautiful day. The water was deep blue and clear so the dolphins were easy to see even under the water. I could go dolphin watching a lot and not get tired of it. I was on a boat with a slide again, so after I finished snorkeling, I did some sliding off the boat into the water.

I met some really interesting people on the tour today. I sat beside a family from France with a teenage daughter. They are on a 6 month backpack tour of the world. They started in Asia a few months ago, then went to Southern Europe and are now making their way through Latin America. They are visiting any country they can get into, and they seem to be having a wonderful time. They said schools in France are mostly online and the environment with masks is not good so they took their daughter out and her education is mostly a world tour, which will be amazing for her. They are probably doing some home schooling too. They were super nice and interesting. There was also a German family with a 3 year old little boy. They are spending 5 weeks in Costa Rica, and they seem to travel quite a bit too. It was interesting to watch them with their little boy. He was part of the family rather than the center of the universe. He was exceptionally well behaved. They put a life jacket on him and took him up to the front of the boat so he could watch dolphins. When we snorkeled, they dropped him in the water to swim with his dad. At one point, his mom wanted to go take pictures while his dad tried out the slide so she told him to sit by himself in the boat until she got back. Our tour guide offered to sit with him, but he would have been on his own otherwise. The kids in both the French and German families will probably grow up to be reasonable people, adventurous, independent people with amazing experiences. This little boy did whatever his mom and dad were doing.

One of my favorite parts of the tours I’ve done is meeting new people and interacting with them normally. We wear masks in the tour van, but once we’re on the boat, no one wears masks. We all know that there’s some risk with Covid, but everyone has decided to live as best they can despite Covid. I’m going to miss that when I come back home. It’s been awesome to be with really interesting, adventurous people who I can talk to normally and don’t have to stay away from. The French family said that Covid had made France a depressing, stressful place so they just decided to leave on a world tour. That’s the kind of person I want to be! I should have asked them what kind of jobs they have that allow them to do a 6 month world tour!

I spent the rest of the day on the beach enjoying the sunshine and swimming. The waves were high today so there were several surfers out. This is a good place to learn to surf. I had overpriced Italian food from the restaurant across the street for dinner. Overall, it was a fun day. Tomorrow is my last day here. I don’t have anything planned. I’ll get some good food and enjoy my last day on the beach.

I didn’t get any really good pictures today, but I’ll post the picture of the board I was on with the slide.
